SALE-A-THON

Adding "a-thon" to the end of a word just to make it sound bigger and better is a practice that needs to be stopped. Unless a Sale-a-thon, Truck-a-thon, or Telethon is taking place in the Greek city of Marathon or involves 26.2 miles of something it should leave well enough alone.

I give the use of "a-thon" for non Greek inspired long distance races one tiny forelimb down.

If necessary to emphasize the scope of an event the following suffixes should be used instead: -orama, -aganza, or, -elebration.
